HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Brendan Miller ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as Hasbrouck Heights defeated Garfield 32-22 in a sub-varsity football game on Friday afternoon at Depken Field in Hasbrouck Heights.
The Aviators opened the scoring on their first possession, hitting Michael Canavatchel for a three-yard scoring pass. He then hit AJ Parente for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.
But the lead was short lived as Garfield returned the kickoff to the 42 yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage, scored on a 58 yard touchdown run. A run around end gave them a two-point conversion and a tie-score at 8-8.
The Aviators took over the rest of the first half, as they scored on their next possession, take five plays to go 56 yards in three minutes for 16-8 lead. Miller rushed in from 13 yards and followed it up with a run for the conversion. Parente had a 30 yard run, and Miller hit Canavatchel for 22 for the big plays on the drive.
The Aviators got the ball back with four minutes remaining, and scored at the two-minute mark with Miller rushing up the middle on a quarterback draw for 31 yard touchdown. Miller then scarmbled in for the conversion and a 24-8.
But the Boilermakers scored on a 85 yard touchdown pass right before the half, to cut the lead to 24-14 as the Aviators were able to stop the two-point conversion.
The Boilermakers drew even closer, when Miller’s pass over the middle was intercepted an returned 65 yards for a touchdown in the third. Garfield converted the two-point conversion.
The Aviators bounced back, scoring in just three plays. Miller scrambled for 16 yards, and then hit Jadan Nelson for 24 yard to get to the five. Robert Boscarino scored from five yards to give the Aviators a 30-22 lead. Miller and Canavatchel once again hooked up for the two point conversion and Hasbrouck Heights had a 10-point cushion going into the fourth quarter.
The Aviators defense stiffened after that, and Boscarino ended any chance for a Boilermaker comeback, intercepting a fourth and 18 pass with 5:43 remaining in the game.
The offense ran the clock down to the final minute, punting the ball away with less than 60 second remaining. The Boilermakers had one last play, but could not do anything as Aiden Warren sacked the Garfield quarterback to end the game.
