HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Usually this time of the year TAPinto is usually writing about the upcoming football playoffs, all the different standings, ranking, what-ifs, and controversies that surround the NJSIAA playoff system.

From the Born Rating issue, which was a statewide controversy throughout the state, to last year’s Opponent Strength Index, and the eliminating of the geographic sections so the state could rank teams 1-16 in the North as it inched towards a statewide championship.

There was the “Northing Number” issue which saw Hasbrouck Heights moved to the Section 2 in 2018, being only the 9th most Northern school in the state that qualified in Group 1.

Ahhh, the good times.

Because 2020 has brought us COVID-19.  The pandemic which has cost thousands of lives, millions of jobs, and brought havoc to the education system.  It has also put on hold, at least for 2020, or any semblance of a normal football season, or state playoffs.

Which is why we bring this week the first installment of the 2020 football rankings.  Even though Gridiron New Jersey is not calculating the power points and producing rankings for the state playoffs, they are maintaining Opponent Strength Index (OSI), which is one half of the formula used to create the final ranking (power points be in the other). Unlike Power Points, OSI carries forward to the following season - albeit with an adjustment.

*NJIC Team

** NJIC Union Division Team - ineligible for state playoffs

Hoboken is just 1-1 in Group 1, but with wins over a Group 3 and Group 2 school, is on top of the OSI standings.  The Red Wings have been a disappointment the last new year’s in the playoffs however.

Park Ridge, the number two ranked squad is the defending North Group on champ, and opened their season with a win over Hasbrouck Heights, who they beat to win the North 2 sectional title on the march to the Group Bowl title in 2019.

Cedar Grove, the number three team, opened the season with a win over Hoboken.

Of course power points would have changed all these rankings, and were not figured out.  (Maybe next week,) It is just really food for thought for next season, when what happened this year, will influence where you start in the polls.

Week 5 of the New Jersey Interscholastic Football Conference schedule is continuing to unravel, as three more games have been canceled for the weekend.

Cresskill has entered a two-week COVID shutdown of all sports. Glen Rock's game with Saddle Brook was canceled as the Falcons remain in quarantine, while St, Mary is not facing Butler due to the amount of injuries on the squad. It is an especially tough break for Butler, who has already lost two games this year due to COVID protocols at their school. The NJIC is helping the schools try to line up games for the weekend.

Hasbrouck Heights faces Becton Friday night at Depken Field with the Meadowlands Division championship on the line.  Both teams are 2-0 in the Division, and both have lost a matchup with Secaucus due to COVID protocols.  The Wildcats are off to a blistering start, opening with convincing wins over Wood-Ridge (42-0), North Arlington (42-0) and Cresskil (30-0).

The Aviators opened with a win over Cresskill 28-14, before dropping a contest at Park Ridge (28-22).  Following their off-week, they defeated North Arlington 46-7.

Changes are happening to the schedule throughout the conference. TAPinto will update the schedule on Thursday when all the pieces stop moving around.
