WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Seven seniors from last year’s Wood-Ridge football team have accepeted invitations to play in the Bergen County North/South game to be held on June 14 at Lyndhurst High School.
Tight end/defensive lineman Eric Drotos, wide receiver/linebacker Johnoi Martin, linebacker/utility back Jake Colon, linebacker Jake Reiter, defensive back/wide receiver Drew Packen, two-way lineman Drew Tomat and defensive back Evan West will represent the Blue Devils in the annual game.
Wood-Ridge coach, TJ Kroncke will run the defense once again for the South.
“Having one last time with my seven seniors will make for some memorable moments,” Kroncke stated. “It’s always nice to keep that football dream going and I am proud of these seven seniors for accomplishing that.”
“Leo Ciappina (head coach of Saddle Brook) does a great job in organizing this event. From practices to a banquet for all, it is an awesome experience for the players and even the coaches.
“This is a great event as it brings the seniors together. It’s funny because it ends up for more the NJIC vs the Big North more than anything else so the NJIC local teams always seem to bond more.”
“t's very exciting considering my brother played in it,” said Drotos. “So it's kind of keeping it in the family now.
When asked about playing against players he has spent four years playing against, Drotos admitted “It's gonna be weird, but we have bonds outside of football. Once we hit the field, it's different.”
They will be joined by players from Becton, Wallington and most of the NJIC teams that reside. One of the players who will be representing Becton is senior wide receiver Nick Monahan, who spent his first two seasons of high school at Hasbrouck Heights.
“It was a great feeling knowing I had one more shot at playing this game that I've fell in love with,” said Monahan. “I can't wait for the opportunity, it's gonna be fun.“
The date of the game, June 14, conflicts with the Hasbrouck Heights Senior prom week. As of now, the none of the Aviator seniors will play in the game.
Last year, the North won 21-7 in a spirited game that showed that both sides forgot about old rivalries, and were focused on alliances.
“I'm excited to play one more high school game with all my friends," said Colon. “And with all my other friends from the other teams. Some of the people I played against for four years I'll be strapping up with again so it's fun.”
Game time is 7 pm.
