WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - It was a night that the defenses won the battle, as Wood-Ridge defeated St. Mary (Rutherford), 10-6 in a NJIC Patriot Division game Friday night at Donna Ricker Field in Wood-Ridge. The Blue Devils improved to 3-3 on the season, while St. Mary (Rutherford) fell to 1-5.
The first half saw a defensive battle, as both teams had difficulties moving the ball, taking a 0-0 score into the locker rooms at halftime.
The game's first score came by the Blue Devils with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter, as Nick Marchitelli scored on a three-yard touchdown run up the middle. Following the extra point, the score was 7-0.
With a 1:48 remaining in the game, the Blue Devils would add key insurance points on Kyle Reiter's 25-yard field goal.
The Gaels responded with under a minute left, when running-back Sonny Ragusa scored on a receiving touchdown inside the red zone. A missed extra point made the final score 10-6 .
Wood-Ridge recovered the onside kick and was able to run out the clock.
