WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge girls soccer coach Jerry Cala is very excited and optimistic about his team’s chances for 2020.  The program is flush in numbers, with the most girls out for the team in school’s history.  This will enable the program to once again play a full JV schedule.

“This is the first time I think that we actually have depth that can actually help us in games,” Cala stated.  “That I think will be an advantage in this post-COVID season, with the shorter pre-season, and the short turnaround time between games.”

He also returns the players who accounted for 37 of the 2019 team’s 40 goals.  That experience is what gives him hope that the Lady Blue Devils, who finished 6-12 a season ago, can turn around their record in close games, and have a good year in 2020.

Of the 37 goals returning, they are all bundled between six returning players.

“We lost nine games by two goals or less last year,” Cala noted.  “If we can turn that around, we can have a great year.”

Goalkeeper:  The one area that Cala does not have a returning player is in goal, as school record holder Angela Picheo (150 saves in 2019) has graduated.  In her place is freshman Ava Rizos.

Defenders:  The starters are led by senior Samantha Eckert, who has been a four-year player for the Lady Blue Devils varsity program. Eckert had two assists a season ago.  She is joined by sophomore Sophie Basich, Lia Wollerman and Vivien Deng.

Junior Angie Aguiliar and sophomore Mairead Helly will provide depth at the position.

Midfielders:  Experience and firepower come from the Lady Blue Devils midfield, as all four starters return with several years of experience.  Senior Emily Gardella (12 goals, 2 assists) is back to lead the offense, joined by fellow senior Stephanie Turi (10 goals, 4 assists) in driving the offense.  Senior Kim Burniston will handle one of the other spots while junior Victoria Drotos (5 goals, 3 assists) handles the other.

Juniors Gisela Castro and Miranda Avila will provide depth in the midfield.

Striker: Senior Natalie Cala, another four-year varsity player, returns after netting seven goals and two assists, in 2019 returns for her final season.  She is joined by sophomore Ava Picheo, who had a goal and an assist, up front.

Cala is looking for senior Lezbeth Ordonez to provide depth up front.
