WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Freshman Emma Baker singled with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to give Wood-Ridge a 9-8 extra inning victory over Weehawken in girls’ softball at Donna Ricker Field at Wood-Ridge High School.
The Blue Devils squandered a 6-2 lead and had to score in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 7-7 and send the game into extra innings.
After Samantha Perez reached leading off the bottom of the 10th with the Blue Devils down 8-7, Maya Ortega singled her home, tying the game at 8-8. Casey Shulz reached via a Wallington error and Emily Aviles singled, loading the bases. With the infield in and the outfield in playing for a play at the plate, Baker unloaded a blast over the outfielder’s head, scoring Ortega with the winning run.
"It was a bomb," Wood-Ridge head coach Andrea Marino stated. "At 14th Street (the other softball field), it would have went out."
Instead, Baker had to "settle" for a game-winning single.
Perez had two doubles in the game, while Madylin Marino and Aviles each tripled. Brooke Biamonte pitched all 10 innings for the win.
