HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Perfection ended two matches short as Lyndhurst upset Hasbrouck Heights, 2-0, in the semi-final round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 1 girls volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon in Hasbrouck Heights.
Lyndhurst captured the first game 25-18, taking advantage of a slow start by the Lady Aviators, as the Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead, as large as 18-8, before Hasbrouck Heights attempted to rally. The Lady Aviators played better late in the game, cutting the lead to 22-16, but it was not enough as Lyndhurst captured game one.
Game two was a see-saw affair that saw the Lady Aviators take a 19-14 lead, that turned on a controversial play with the score tied at 22-22. After a volley back and forth, Hasbrouck Heights hit a shot that initially looked like it landed in front of the diving Lyndhurst player, who returned the ball into the net. The ball bounced back off the net to a Lyndhurst player who dropped in front of a Hasbrouck Heights defender
Hasbrouck Heights objected that the ball hit the ground before Lyndurst returned the shot to no avail, and the Lady Bears took a 23-22 lead and captured the momentum of the match. Lyndhurst then captured the next two points in a 7-0 run to overcome a 22-18 deficit to win game two, and the match, 25-22.
“I’m really going to miss this senior class for volleyball,” said head coach Jackie Ferranti. “In my coaching career, there are a bunch of groups I wish I could have longer and this class definitely ranks up there. Their parents should really be proud of the young women they have raised. It really has been a pleasure to coach them.”
"This is the best season that Heights has ever seen. We worked so hard together to win the first League title in Heights Volleyball history," said Hasbrouck Heights senior and team captain Nicole Dallara. "I’m so proud of all of the girls and how they continued to work hard through these tough times. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the team and the volleyball program."
