HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Senior Victoria Vizzachero’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie, as Hasbrouck Heights defeated Paterson Charter 3-0 in the opening round of the NJSIAA Girls Softball Tournament on Monday afternoon at Hitchcock Field in Hasbrouck Heights.
Autumn Thorpe tripled with one out in the bottom of the fifth to get the rally started. Kimmy Halpin beat out a bunt base hit, to put runners on the corners with one out. After Halpin stole second, Paterson Charter pitcher Maxibel Garcia walked Olivia Marinelli to load the bases. Vizzachero lifted a fly ball to left field that scored Thorpe, giving the Aviators a 1-0 lead.
Alexa Marinelli then lifted a fly ball to left field that was misplayed, allowing Halpin and Olivia Marinelli to score, and giving some insurance runs and a 3-0 lead.
Olivia Marinelli shut the Lions down the rest of the way, and the Lady Aviators advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against Pompton Lakes at Hitchcock Field at 4 pm. She allowed only 1 hit, Garica’s leadoff single in the seventh, while striking out nine in picking up the victory.
Garcia allowed only three hits, walking four and striking out six in suffering the defeat. The Lions also made two errors behind her, accounting for two unearned runs.
