RUTHERFORD, NJ - Rutherford’s defense shut down the Hasbrouck Heights offense, and the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead to record a 23-0 victory over the Aviators and capture the 2019 Meadowland Football League Superbowl Championship in Rutherford.
2019 was the year that Rutherford was scheduled to host the Super Bowl games, which are played at a predetermined site each season. Next year’s Super Bowl weekend is scheduled for Saddle Brook. (All the teams, rotating alphabetically, get to host once every 12 years.) Rutherford qualified all three of its teams into the final.
After the Aviators stopped on a fourth and 10 at the Rutherford 29, it appeared that the Aviators would be able to jump out to a quick lead due to the favorable field position.
But the Bulldogs stopped the Aviators on fourth and eight from the Rutherford 28, switching the momentum back in favor of the home team. Rutherford would control the ball the remainder of the first quarter, scoring on the first play of second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
Their next possession the Bulldogs got back in the end zone, taking a 15-0 lead when the extra point was good.
(In Meadowlands Football rules, kicked extra points are worth two points, run/pass for conversion worth one.)
The Aviators next drive ended at the Rutherford 45. After a sack and an incomplete pass pushed the Bulldogs back to third and 19, the Bulldogs broke the game open. After a 54-yard run put the ball down at the 13 yard line, they scored on the next play on a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 23-0 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter, giving Rutherford the victory.
(Under MFL rules, Senior division games with a point differential after three quarters are considered final.)
