SADDLE BROOK, NJ - It is the time of the football season where games start to take on an extra importance. A stumble could cost a season’s worth of work in the standings. That what was at stake for the Hasbrouck Heights squads in the Meadowlands Football League on Saturday night.
(Meadowlands Football reminder: Conversions, if kicked are worth two points, while a run or pass is one point. If the lead for one team is greater than three scores (18 points) after three quarters, the game is over and a 'B' game commences.)
Senior Division Hasbrouck Heights 32, Saddle Brook 6
Running back Jake Summers ran for three touchdowns and George Kouletas kicked four extra points as Hasbrouck Heights turned back the Falcons, 32-6, in a Senior Division game for first place on Saturday evening. The Falcons came into the game 5-1, as did the Aviators, whose only loss was a last second loss to Wood-Ridge opening night.
Summers got the scoring off with a 20-yard run to give the Aviators an early lead. Kouletas extra point made the score 8-0. Summers extended the lead to 14-0 with a 40-yard run with 5:25 remaining in the first half. Kouletas kick increased the lead to 16-0.
Saddle Brook returned the kickoff 80 yards to get on the board at 14-6. The point after conversion was blocked.
Frankie Billings three-yard in the third quarter made the score 22-0, with Kouletas continuing his perfect day, making the score 24-6 with the kick. Summers finished the scoring late in third quarter with a 29-yard run, with Kouletas converting for his fourth conversion of the day.
The Aviators are now 6-1 on the season, Saddle Brook falls to 5-2.
Junior Division: Hasbrouck Heights 20, Saddle Brook 0
The Aviators improved to 5-2 with a shutout win over Saddle Brook. The Aviators are third in the Northern Division of the Meadowland Football League, trailing New Milford (7-0) and Elmwood Park, 6-1.
Pee Wee Division Hasbrouck Heights 33, Saddle Brook 0
Hasbrouck Heights used a balanced rushing attack to defeat Saddle Brook, 33-0. The Aviators improve to 5-2 on the season with the win, while Saddle Brook falls to 2-5 in defeat.
Luke Haines started the scoring off, rushing for a 30- yard quarterback keeper for a 6-0 lead. Nick Haines followed with a 5- yard run for the second score. Nick Leone ran in the point after conversion for a 13-0 Heights lead.
Nick Leone stretched the lead to 19-0 Heights, with Deacon DeLorenzo’s run for the conversion making the score 20-0. The pair switched roles on the next touchdown, as DeLorenzo scored from eight yards out, and Leone scoring on the conversion run.
Faiz Najjar scored the game’s final touchdown, scoring on an eight yard run.
Joe Zorat chipped in two sacks in the shutout effort.
