(Updated) HS Cross Country: Heights Boys 11th, DiLascio 14th in State Group Championships



HOLMDEL, NJ -  Hasbrouck Heights concluded their cross country season with an 11th place finish in the Boys Group State Championships, while Giana DiLascio, who qualified as an individual finished 14th in Group 1, in the Girls event on Saturday afternoon in Holmdel.  

"It was a great conclusion to an awesome season,"  Hasbrouck Heights head cross-country coach Mike Ryan.  '

DiLascio, a senior in her final cross-country race, set a personal record for the course, at 21.12 seconds for the 5000 meters.  

She and the boys' team went down to the course on Wednesday to scout it out, as it is not a course that they run during the regular season.  

“I was happy that I was able to run well in my last race,” DiLascio stated.  “It was a nice running in the cold.  I warmed up once I started.”

She was a bit sad, however, as cross-country is her favorite of the three track seasons.  After the race, DiLascio, as well as several of the girls on the cross-country team, cheered on their male counterparts in the boys' race.  

She gave the boys teams some advice on the course.

“It is a tough course, a beautiful course, “ she said,  “but it gets easier after the first mile.”

“This team is so close” she stated.

The boys finished in 11th, as Rei Vaka and Bryan Cobcobo also raced their final times as seniors.  

She was thrilled with their performance.  “The boys ran so awesome.”    

Junior Ryan Mernin ran finished 45th in the overall standings, turning in a 18:03 time.  Jeremy Bailey finished in 62rd as the Heights balance then kicked in.  Rei Vaka, TK Kasper and RJ Singh followed closely.  Cobcobo and Joe Canavatchel rounded out the squad today.  Canavatchel was replacing Nick Bua, who has missed the past two meets due to illness/injury.

"We were shooting for top 10, and we came in 11th," Ryan stated.  "It is the highest finish we had since we re-started the program back in 2008."

Long Beach Island Summer Shuttle No Longer A Free Ride

Bateman Bill, “ Bijou’s Law”, to Require Training, Licensing for Pet Groomers
