WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Good pitching and clutch hitting is always the key to winning baseball. A little luck is also always welcome.
Liam Winslow continued Wood-Ridge’s dominant pitching in the Last Dance Tournament, throwing a four-hit, complete game shutout as Wood-Ridge defeated Midland Park, 3-0, to advance to the finals of the Becton-Wood-Ridge Regional against St. Mary Thursday evening at 7 pm.
Wood-Ridge took the lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth as courtesy runner Nick Pfeiffer (running for catcher Michael Sarlo) scored when Nick Rizos chopper took a hop that the Midland Park shortstop could not handle, and bounded into left field, plating the game’s first run.
Wood-Ridge was able to add two insurance runs in the sixth, one on Trey Packen’s single to left field scoring Pfeffer (running for first baseman Stephen Crandall who had led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.)
The second Wood-Ridge run came with two outs, when Sarlo lifted a fly ball to right field that Midland Park right fielder seemed to have trouble navigating in the lights. The ball fell for a double, scoring Packen, and Wood-Ridge had a 3-0 lead. They almost added another run as Nick Marchitelli lofted another fly ball to right, which the right fielder made a shoestring catch on to end the inning.
Winslow, who had escaped trouble in top of the fourth, walked two hitters with one out in the seventh inning. With the tying run at the plate, Winslow struck out the final two hitters of the game to preserve his shutout and send Wood-Ridge into Thursday’s final against St. Mary (Rutherford).
