REHOBOTH BEACH, DE - Talk about the fast track for a baseball player.
Wood-Ridge’s Sal Catanzaro spent the spring and early summer on the track, qualifying in 11-12 age bracket for the National Championships in North Carolina last weekend in the 80 Meter Hurdles. But he skipped the meet, because he wanted to play in a baseball tournament.
Catanzaro, and the U12 Prospects out of North Arlington, traveled to Delaware on Friday to play in the Sandcastle Open at Sports at the Beach Tournament in Rehoboth Beach. Catanzaro, the team’s center fielder, went 8-for-14, and slugged two home runs, as the Prospects went 3-3 on the weekend.
The Prospects opened with a 12-2 loss, before bouncing back with an 11-1 win, in which Catanzaro slugged his first home run of the tournament. They followed that up with a tough 14-9 loss.
Catanzaro hit his second home run when the Prospects bounced back with a 12-9 win. A two-game win streak followed, as the Prospects won 11-1, but were eliminated from the tournament with a 9-2 loss on Sunday.
