BRANCHBURG/HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ -- Hasbrouck Heights' Ryan Quish will join other youth actors from around the state in a production of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods." The musical will be performed at Raritan Valley Community College on Sunday, August 25.

New Jersey Youth Actors, a theatre group made up of youth artists from all around the state of New Jersey, is presenting the musical.  The production is comprised of an all youth cast, crew, and production team from Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Berkley Heights, and Hasbrouck Heights. Quish is playing the role of The Baker.

The play "Into The Woods"  is about the iconic fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel all crossing paths with one another as they venture "Into the Woods:  to seek out their own personal wishes.   A witch is revealed to have cursed The Bakers cottage and in order to lift it, he and his wife must collect an item from each of the other characters above.  Things go array when their choices are revealed to have dire consequences.

"I've previously have enjoyed other Stephen Sondheim works such as "Sweeney Todd" and "West Side Story," said Quish. "My first experience with "Into The Woods"  was through Disney's 2014 adaption. I truly enjoy how Sondheim mixes action and music together to tell a fast paced, emotionally engaging story."

The Hasbrouck Heights senior has been performing for years. His first show was "The Jesus Story" when he was nine years old at Felician University. He's also performed in the Hasbrouck Heights school productions since sixth grade. Outside productions include, "Beauty and the Beast Jr." at Old Library Theatre (he played The Beast), "Les Miserables" at Rhino Theatre (he played Marius) and "Les Miserables" at Union County Performing Arts Center (in the role of Javier.) He's also been a member of the Papermill Playhouse Broadway Show Choir for two straight seasons.

Quish has studied with vocal teacher, Karen Beardsley Demarest since 2016.  He also takes workshops and classes with acting teacher and coach Rita Litton in New York City.

"What I enjoy most about singing and performing is the translation of emotions I can convey through a character or a song and through that, how I can connect with the audience," said Quish.

And yes, he does get butterflies before a performance.

"The build up or anticipation before the performance is usually the culprit, however I get over it quickly as soon as I step on the stage," he said.

In college, Quish plans are to pursue Theatre and Acting as well as Film and Directing, "ideally I would love to study predominately in New York City."

Tickets for “Into the Woods” are on sale already at the website under Tickets Online. There is no charge for the show (other than the theater’s ticket processing fee).
