HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Fall activities abound at the Hasbrouck Heights Free Public Library in October. There is everything from pajama time and scary movies to craft and book club events. There will also be special lectures on Killer Soundtracks, Music in Horror Movies, and an in-depth look at the Salem Witch trials. Registration is required for all programs unless otherwise noted. Pajama Story Time - Put on your PJ’s and join us for a special evening story time! We will be meeting on Monday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 23 starting at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome!
Lego Club - Join the Hasbrouck Heights Lego Club! Children ages five to 12 are invited to build and create with us on Tuesday, October 8 and 22, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Legos will be provided.
Book Bingo - Be a part of Book Bingo and win prizes! We will be meeting on Thursday, October 17, starting at 3:30 p.m. for ages 5-12.
Spooky Movies - Enjoy some spook-tacular movies at the library leading up to Halloween. Movies for kids and teens will be shown on October 28, 29 and 30 starting at 3:30 p.m.
Book Clubs for Kids - Join one of our two book clubs for kids! Books for both groups, along with more information, are available at the Children’s Desk.
• Best Books is for students in grades 2-3, and meets on the first Friday of each month.
• Critics’ Choice is for students in grades 4-6, and meets on the third Friday of each month
Teen Advisory Board- Make your voice heard! We meet on the second Thursday of each month. Teens can participate in community service projects, learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities, have a say in teen programming at the library and make suggestions for books to add to the library’s Young Adult collection. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 10, from 4-5 p.m.
Teen Readers’ Club- We meet on the first Monday of the month to discuss a book, eat snacks, and play games. Copies of each month’s book will be available for checkout at the front desk. On Monday, November 4, from 7-8:30 p.m. we will discuss OCD, The Dude and Me by Lauren Roedy Vaughn.
Halloween Craft Event for Teens and Adults- Join this fun-filled afternoon for teens and adults when we will create a special Halloween-themed craft. The craft project will be held on Wednesday, October 16, from 3-4:30 pm in the Library’s conference room. Supplies are limited. Registration is required.
Killer Soundtracks: “Music in Horror Movies” – The Library is pleased to host guest speaker Dan Lupo, a musician and music educator, who will provide a lecture on the effects of music within the horror movie genre, accompanied by a musical performance on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in the Senior Center, entrance is located on the corner of Center & Madison Avenues. All are welcome to attend.
‘Monday Afternoon” at the Library: “The Salem Witch Trials Lecture” - On Monday, October 21 from 3-4:30 p.m, guest speaker Myrna Nahas will present a historical lecture on “The Salem Witch Trials.” Her 90-minute multimedia presentation will take us back to the late 17th century for an in-depth look at the events and circumstances that led to the fears, hysteria and persecution of many Massachusetts Bay colonists during this time period. This event and every third Monday of every month, the Library is please to host an educational afternoon program in the Library’s large meeting room.
Adult Book Group – Calling all book lovers! Enjoy a lively talk and refreshments as we discuss a select novel the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. The upcoming meeting on Tuesday, October 22 will discuss The Boys in the Boat: The True Story of an American Team’s Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics by Daniel Brown. Call the library for further details.
Looking ahead to upcoming “Must Attend” family events
30th Annual Lego Night –Join us for our annual Lego building event on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m. Show off your architectural talents and come create with us. An Evening with Your Local Author –The Third Annual Author Day Celebration will be held Thursday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in the library’s large meeting room. Featured will be the readings, stories, music and more of our local self-published and independent authors. Teens to adults are encouraged to attend. Presenters will include members of our own local Writers and Authors Group, but we are open to poets, musicians and anyone with a unique talent who would like to share.
