HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ -- The Hasbrouck Heights Junior Woman’s Club hosted its second “Meet the Candidates” for Board of Education and Town Council forum in Kiefer Auditorium in the Junior/Senior High School Monday night. The event lasted approximately 90 minutes.

Two of the four BOE candidates attended -- Lauren Terranova and current member Cara Capasso-Murray. Chris DeLorenzo and current member Connie Doheny were unable to attend. A closing statement was read for Doheny in her absence. Alan Baker, who was running for re-election before resigning,  will be replaced by the current Board.

For Borough Council, Steve Reyngoudt and Helayne Weiss (Democrats) attended; current Councilman Russell Lipari and Michael Sickels (Republicans) were not in attendance.

The forum opened with a welcome and introduction by Jen Tsigaris, president of the Junior Woman’s Club, who also served as the moderator.

Re-occurring concerns raised by all candidates included transparency, communication, constituent feedback and input, strategic planning, and incorporating social media as a form of communication, among others.

The candidates answered eight questions previously submitted by the public. They covered a variety of topics including what motivated them to run, what they thought was the biggest challenge facing schools/borough and how to address it,  equitable education for all students, how to make the high school competitive with other area high schools, how to improve the town's business environment, a vision for Woodland Park, and what they’d like their key accomplishments to be.

Each candidate had one minute for an introduction, 90 seconds to answer each question and two minutes for closing statements. A timekeeper kept the candidates and evening on track.

Video of the forum is available for the public to watch. It can be found on the Hasbrouck Heights Junior Woman’s Club Facebook page.
