HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - A Hasbrouck Heights coach is leading an ongoing effort to feed the New Jersey National Guard who work at the screening sites in Bergen and Monmouth counties.
Dale Sipos began a coordinated effort to provide meals to the military personnel who work at the FEMA screening sites at Bergen Community College in Paramus, and PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.
The Bergen site is staffed with up to 70 troops. Sipos is working with Elliot Cohen and Everything Bagel in Paramus. He provides pre-sliced bagels, along with butter and cream cheese. The troops arrive at the college around 6:30 a.m., so Cohen delivers breakfast to the soldiers at 5:30 a.m. before leaving for the day. Sipos said the breakfast "is a good start to the day."
The Monmouth County site has 35 troops, who are stationed out of Sea Girt. Sipos is working with Naples Pizza, out of Spring Lake Heights. They receive dinner, including 14 pies, salad with grilled chicken and soda. The Monmouth site opened on Monday, March 23.
A native of Lodi, Sipos is a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and Rutgers University. He is also a staple on the sideline of the Hasbrouck Heights football team as a coach as a member of the Hasbrouck Heights American Legion Post 106. He has been reaching out to businesses and people to help cover the costs of feeding the Guard. Breakfast in Paramus is $80, while dinner in Holmdel/Sea Girt is $300. Next week, Philly Pretzel Factory in Hasbrouck Heights will be providing an evening treat for the north Jersey troops.
Sipos started a Facebook page to spread the word and provide a main portal for information, Appreciation of the NJ National Guard. Anyone interested in helping sponsor meals for the NJ National Guard can contact Sipos via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
