HACKENSACK, NJ -- Sunday morning volunteers from Hasbrouck Heights participated in the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce's seventh annual Basket Brigade at the New Jersey Friendship House in Hackensack.
Volunteers included over 30 members of the Hasbrouck Heights marching band and music program, Hasbrouck Heights Girl Scout Juniors Troop 95550 and town residents. In addition, members of the Bergen County Junior Police Academy helped, as well as volunteers from throughout the area.
The annual event provides a complete Thanksgiving meal for local families in need. Each meal is assembled by volunteers and anonymously delivered on the weekend before Thanksgiving.
"I am proud of all who participated and love the message this sends at Thanksgiving," said Girl Scout Troop Leader Tricia Sonzogni.
The Basket Brigade was initiated by the Chamber’s Contractors and Building Services Committee when Super Storm Sandy hit in 2012, according to Judy Ross, Vice President. It was an effort to deliver Thanksgiving dinners to those who were devastated primarily in Moonachie and Little Ferry area. Now in its seventh year, the outreach has grown to over 135 volunteers and delivers close to 300 baskets.
This year "the dinners were assembled in record time" of 30 minutes, said Ross. She noted that one contributor was Larry Inserra of Inserra Supermarkets, who donates the turkeys for the cause.
The contents in each basket included a turkey, stuffing, corn, green beans, yams, corn bread mix, cranberry sauce, pie, and a roasting pan. Also included is a note that reads: This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.
"The Chamber is very grateful for the volunteer effort this brings to the community," said Ross.
