WOOD-RIDGE, NJ -- The call went out: the area Rotary was collecting school supplies for borough children. And local residents responded.

In July, Rotary Club District 7490 announced it was holding a school supply drive for children for the upcoming school year. The district club, which covers Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties, collected school supplies for special needs students, according to Forrest Elliott.

He worked in conjunction with the Wood-Ridge Parent Advisory Network and Bonnie Taylor. The drop-off site was Kearny Bank in Wood-Ridge. The goal was collect enough supplies to stuff about 30 backpacks to be distributed at Catherine E. Doyle School and Wood-Ridge Intermediate School.

As of Saturday, the effort netted school supplies to fill over 40 backpacks. Supplies included notebooks, binders, pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, scissors, rulers markers, folders, glue sticks and white glue, calculators and hand sanitizer, tissues, and backpacks.

"This is amazing," said Elliott. "People are really generous."

In a separate drive, the organization also collected 50 bags of supplies for students in the Secaucus district.
