HHFD Santa Around Town was created over 30 years ago by firefighters who wanted to give back to the community. According to Ed Mucha of the Santa Committee, the sled and reindeer were created by the late Byron deRussy, a firefighter for many years who had a talent for woodworking. The first Santa was firefighter Turk Eckert, who played Santa until he retired for health reasons.
Santa travels around town in his sled, which is refurbished and maintained by firefighters. It is on a trailer which is pulled by a truck that plays Christmas carols and is escorted by the HHFD fire vehicles. Candy canes are given to each child and many sit on Santa's lap for a photo. Some people even bring their dogs to meet Santa, who loves dogs.
Any parent who has a special needs or ill child who cannot make a location can contact the Fire Chief at 201-288-0082 to make a special arrangement. Each stop usually lasts 30 minutes.
