HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Councilman Ron Kistner presented Hasbrouck Heights graduate Mickey O’Malley with a sign honoring his historic undefeated 2018 season which culminated in Hasbrouck Heights third NJSIAA State wrestling championship.
O’Malley became the third Hasbrouck Heights wrestler to ever capture a state crown, when he captured the 2018 title in Atlantic City at the state championships. He joined Bill Spinder, class of 1976, and Morgan Horner, class of 2001, as the only Aviators to capture a state championship.
O’Malley was a four time state finalist and finishing fifth at 138 pounds as a freshman, second at 145 pounds as a sophomore, third at 152 pounds, before winning the title at 170. With a career record of 163-12, O’Malley is the school’s all-time leader in wins.
“I know this is a little late,” said Kistner, laughing. “But we had scheduling difficulties getting Mickey here.”
O’Malley, who wrestles year-round, accepted a scholarship to Drexel for 2018-19, where he finished with a 17-4 record competing only in tournaments during his redshirt freshman year.
“Knowing your talent and dedication, we may be presenting another one of these next year,” said Kistner. “As NCAA champ.”
While O’Malley left with the sign, he will, before returning to school, return it to the Board of Education so it can be hung inside the wrestling room at the Franklin Gym. It will join signs that Kistner has personally purchased for the two previous wrestling champions.
Kistner has also purchased signs for the 2007, 2016, 2017, 2018 state football championships, the 2015 Girls Sectional Basketball Championship, the 2007 Baseball Sectional Championship, and numerous Hasbrouck Heights Junior Football League championship teams.
He anticipates buying more, acknowledging the success of Hasbrouck Heights sports programs.
“That’s okay,” Kistner said. “I like doing it.”
