WOOD-RIDGE, NJ -- A sunny spring morning greeted the Wood-Ridge Moonachie Little League on Saturday for the annual Opening Day parade and ceremony at 6th Street Field, while the girls' softball program held their opening day ceremonies at the 14th Street Field.

The parade kicked off from the corner of Sussex Road and Valley Boulevard. Players, coaches and parents received an escort from the Wood-Ridge Police Department to the baseball field, where League President Phil Romero welcomed everyone and recognized Mayor Sarlo and Council members.  Additionally he thanked the Wood-Ridge police and fire departments, and the League board for the assistance in preparing for the day. According to Romero, there are 225 players registered for baseball this year, and another 40 in the Babe Ruth League.

The 2018 8 - 10-year-old New Jersey District 5 Champions were recognized. Wood-Ridge Mayor Paul Sarlo and Moonachie Mayor Vaccaro each threw out a ceremonial the first pitch.

The Mayor, Council and League members then headed to the 14th Street Field to hold opening day ceremonies for over 130 softball players. The Wood-Ridge Fire Department team were awarded trophies as the 2018 South Bergen Girls Minor Division Champions.  Council President and former player Catherine Cassidy threw out the first pitch. The Wood-Ridge softball program is open to girls from kindergarten to eighth grade.
