NORTH HALEDON, NJ - Brooke Freschi led off with a single, stole second and scored on Mackenzie Riordan’s bunt single to give North Haledon a 1-0 lead two batters into the bottom of the first as the North Haledon Reds beat Wayne 9-2 to capture 14U Bergen County Girls Softball Championship.
Freschi and Riordan, the pair of Hasbrouck Heights players, who are also cousins, played for North Haledon when Heights did not have enough players for a summer team, were the key to the Reds offense from the top of the order. The duo each had three hits in five at bats, each scored two runs, with Riordan driving in two and Freschi one.
The Reds advanced to the final with a 11-1 victory on Thursday, with Riordan going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
North Haledon finished 9-1 on the season, capturing the championship over teams from Wayne, Westwood, Ridgewood, Glen Rock and Hawthorne. The Reds avenged their only loss of the season to Wayne, 14-6, on July 10.
