WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - The Wood-Ridge Fire Department, in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, will again have fire engine rides and educational activities for children on Sunday, October 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Wood-Ridge Firehouse on 85 Humboldt Street.

Children will watch a short film on fire prevention and take a ride inside one of the fire trucks around town. The Bergen County Fire Prevention trailer will also be on site so children can experience a smoke-filled environment.

Wood-Ridge Fire Department reminds parents to talk to their children about how they can prevent fires with the following tips:

  • Never play with lighters or matches;
  • Never leave candles unattended;
  • Never play with electrical cords, and never put anything in an electric socket;
  • Don't turn up a heater without an adult's permission;
  • Blankets and clothes do not belong on top of lamps;
  • If your clothes catch fire, Stop, Drop, and Roll.

Parents should install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on all floors of the home. Check them monthly. Change the batteries when you re-set your clock.  Have an escape plan and practice it.

A parent or guardian must be present the day of the event and sign a permission slip for their child(ren) to participate.

Fire Prevention Week is October 6 to 12. Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country.
