WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - The lack of guidance from the state concerning re-opening of recreation programs was a continuing topic of conversation at the Wood-Ridge Recreation Commission meeting on Wednesday evening.
Currently awaiting answers to when summer recreation programs can begin, the lack of guidance from the state, and sports leagues is also impacting the timing of sign-ups for fall recreation programs as well.
Recreation football was awaiting guidance from both the state and the Meadowlands Football League for the 2020 football season. The MFL was also meeting on Wednesday night, so Lori Ann Iacovino was awaiting to hear from the league as to what guidance they have been told as far as football this year. She, along with the MFL, is also awaiting guidance from the NJSIAA for regulations As a result they have not begun signing up players for the season.
This also impacts recreation cheering regsitration, which ties into football,
Competitive cheerleading sign-ups and tryouts are already underway, with tryout via Zoom ongoing.
Soccer sign-ups for the fall season are also on hold at this time, as they are awaiting guidance.
As part of the discussion at the meeting, there was discussion about the timing of opening signups to the public. After agreeing that programs for the fall should go ahead with signups as if there will be a season, with refunds giving if the season needed to be cancelled, it was also agreed that signups for both soccer and football be done at the same time.
It was suggested by Councilman Ezio Altamura that sign ups begin by the end of the month for all the fall sports.
“If we have to give refunds, we will give refunds,” Altamura stated. “Hopefully it does not come to that. But we should start signups so that the teams can start their planning as well.”
Additionally, a concern was raised for fall sports that baseball/softball travel leagues may push their schedules into the fall, reducing the amount of players able to for participation in football/soccer and cheering.
The Recreation Department will be sponsoring a summer baseball program, which will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while the 13-15 Wood-Ridge Babe Ruth team will play games among themselves on Fridays. Additionally, there is the Last Dance Tournament (for high school players) scheduled for July as well an alumni game on July 20.
