WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - The Wood-Ridge Recreation Commission passed a resolution to recommend to the Mayor and Council to cancel the 2020 Summer Recreation Program at its meeting Wednesday evening. They also passed another resolution to recommend to the Mayor and Council that Recreation Director Jacqueline Goldklang develop an online recreation program to help replace the cancelled Summer Recreation Program.
Councilman Ezio Altamura, who is the Commission’s Council Liaison, will make the recommendation at next Wednesday's Borough Council meeting.
Citing safety concerns for the children and counselors who run the camp, it was unanimously agreed that the cancellation was the right course of action. The only discussion came around whether the recommendation had to be done at Wednesday’s meeting, or if they could wait until the next meeting, in hopes that guidance from Trenton or a change in current conditions would allow the camp.
The recommendations however were made after recognizing that those who were planning to have their children participate in the camp would need to make other arrangements, and would need the extra time.
Additionally, it was also important to let the students who were planning to work as counselors at the camp now that it was cancelled, so they could make alternative arrangements for summer income.
After a brief discussion it was agreed that the decision be made on Wednesday, and it was passed unanimously.
Next a discussion about a virtual summer camp be looked into, Goldklang was confident a program could be put together, but did not have all the particulars ready to be discussed. A resolution was passed that she would continue to work on the proposal for the next meeting.
All recreation sports activities are in a holding pattern, either waiting for an approval to start their seasons (softball, baseball, spring soccer) or waiting for the various leagues to provide guidance around start dates for fall season. Mike Kaseman informed the commission that American Legion has cancelled its 2020 season.
The following individuals make up the recreation commission.
Director of Recreation & Senior Services Jacqueline Goldklang
Council liaison - Councilman Ezio Altamura
Commission Members :
Michele Mabel (1st Alternate)
Mike Kaseman (2nd Alternate)
