HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ -- Borough residents will soon be able to sign up for a "No Knock" registry to stop door-to-door solicitors who visit their homes.

The borough is putting the final touches on the registry, according to Borough Clerk Laurie Varga. Residents will be able to sign up online through the borough's website, or in person. Those who register will also receive a sign to post in a window. Merchants, peddlers, vendors, or persons who are approved by the borough for a license will be issued a list of registered residents.  They are also to notify the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department desk before going out.

The borough outlined specific procedures for solicitors to go door-to-door in Chapter 202 of the borough code. A peddler, person, merchant, or vendor must apply for a license at Borough Hall. The Hasbrouck Heights Police Department conducts a background check and takes fingerprints.  If approved, the applicant puts up a bond, pays a fee, and is issued a license. Individuals must carry the license with them while engaged in business. Per the borough code, those exempt for requiring a license include:

  • Anyone honorably discharged from the military, Naval or Marine forces of the U.S.;
  • Any person who is an exempt member of a volunteer fire department (as defined by P.L. 1911, c. 133), and
  • Any person selling fruits, vegetables, and farm products produced on a farm operated by the vendor or member of his family, provided proof is submitted ahead of time.

The established hours for door-to-door canvassing are weekdays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 pm to 9 p.m. Commercial solicitation is prohibited on Sundays.

Some of the current businesses approved by Hasbrouck Heights include ice cream trucks, a utility company, and cable company.
