WASHINGTON, D.C. - Earlier last week, the Hasbrouck Heights Council acknowledges an official communication from the US Interior Department which strongly advised against going ahead with plans to fill in over six acres of wetlands to expand airplane parking and hangar space at Teterboro Airport. By week's end, the Port Authority was informed that millions of federal dollars were awarded to Teterboro for different projects, runway improvements and a new control tower.
Early in the week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would award $986 million in airport infrastructure grants, the fifth allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Airport Improvement Program(AIP) funding for airports across the United States, according to an announcement from the USDOT.
Investments in airport improvements in New Jersey will fund construction and rehabilitation projects to three state airports:
- Teterboro Airport - $1,300,000 grant funds rehabilitation of Taxiway A, Taxiway V, and the removal of Taxiway B from Runway 1-19 to Runway 6-24.
- Millville Municipal Airport - $695,484 grant funds aircraft parking apron rehabilitation.
- Newark Liberty International $8,280,118 grants fund rehabilitation of Taxiway S and Taxiway Z and the rehabilitation of 6,400 feet of Runway 11-29.
On Friday, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), and Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award a contract for the construction of a new air traffic control tower at Teterboro Airport. Walsh Construction Company will be tasked with designing and building the new tower and base building for Teterboro.
