HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Strike another blow against the Port Authority and First Aviation Services plan to fill and cover six acres of wetlands to increase additional parking and hangar capacity of up to 38 commercial jet planes at Teterboro Airport.
First proposed in 2015 (Signature Flight Support Corporation) and 2016 (First Aviation Services), it appears that the United States Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service has strongly suggested denying the permits.
According to a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and authorized as a communication to the Borough of Hasbrouck Heights at Tuesday evening’s meeting, the Fish and Wildlife Service gave a detailed summary and recommendations against the granting Teterboro Airport permission to move forward with the plan.
Hasbrouck Heights Borough Clerk Laurie Varga read the following into the record from the conclusion of the four page letter.
“The Service requests that the Corps not issue any permits for the fixed base operator/Port Authority projects currently proposed. As the wetland of the Meadowlands are considered an ARNI, should the Corps issue a permit over our objection the Service will invoke Part IV - Elevation of Individual Permit Decisions pursuant to our Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of the Interior and the Department of the Army dated December 21, 1992.”
Hasbrouck Heights Mayor Jack DeLorenzo commented that he is under the impression that the Port Authority, with this rejection and the continued objection of Hasbrouck Heights and several other Bergen County towns, and their engineers, is not going to pursue this further.
Concerns over the impact of the East and West Riser Ditches, and the flooding during periods of rainfall, have been at the forefront of the fight against this project since September 2017.
(More coverage of Tuesday's meeting will appear in future days.)
