JERSEY CITY, NJ -- A delegation of Hasbrouck Heights High School students attended the 28th Annual Saint Peter’s University Model United Nations Competition, originally scheduled for March 4 and 5. The inclement weather played havoc with the schedule and the two-day conference was condensed into one day.
This is the third year that Hasbrouck Heights participated in the SPUMUN competition. Students are given a choice of committees they would like to participate on such as Legal, World Health Organization and Sustainable Development. Some of the topics the students addressed included definition of a refuge, mandatory vaccination schedule, safety of healthcare workers in Conflict Zones, expansion of solar panels, and the shortage of drinking water.
This year the Hasbrouck Heights delegation assigned the country of Peru, which has representation on the Security Council this year. With the condensed sessions, students had a morning and afternoon session of debate.
The Hasbrouck Heights High School Model UN Peruvian Delegation met with His Excellency, Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, the Ambassador to the Permanent Mission of Peru to the United Nations. A career diplomat with 30 years in Peru’s Foreign Service, he represents Peru before the Security Council (term 2018-2019), chaired by him in April. He presides the Counter-Terrorism Committee; and also the informal Group of Friends for “Culture and Development”; and co-chairs the groups on “Financial Inclusion” and “Prevention of Natural Disasters Risk.”
