HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ -- In honor of National Pi Day (also Albert Einstein’s birthday), students at Hasbrouck Heights Middle School had the chance to celebrate mathematics in general, as well as master a challenge to recite the infinite numbers of Pi (3.14) on March 14, or 314.
Students participated in Math-based Kahoot games in their classes throughout the week. The winners of each game were added to the list of students who were permitted to smash pies in the faces of their teachers and principals. Staff members also participated in Pie eating contests between each other while the students cheered them on.
Pi Day was started last year in 2018 from an idea proposed by Kirstin Krysz, middle school teacher and Trep$ club advisor, who had brainstormed with her students. The true goal behind this idea was simply to give students a chance to celebrate Math.
Each grade had different contestants to cheer on. Both Joseph Mastropietro, principal, and Frank D'Amico, vice principal, competed in all three contests. They were joined by science teacher Dave Rispoli for the sixth grade contest; math teacher Adam Baeira for seventh grade, and teacher Sean Mansfield for eighth grade. The amateur competitive eaters had a choice of either chocolate of banana pudding pie. It was a clean sweep as Mastropietro won all three contests.
In addition, Krysz and Trep$ students sold raffle tickets for over a week at lunchtime for students to have a chance to "Pie" a staff member. All funds raised will be donated to underprivileged children, explained D'Amico.
The seriously fun business came when students got to "pie" their favorite teacher. In addition to Mastropietro and D'Amico, science teacher Kathleen Toy and American Sign Language/special education teacher Shannon Rodenberg were popular targets.
"It was really a lot of fun and the whole atmosphere of staff and students doing fun things other together other than the norm is what made it so much fun," said D'Amico. "PE teachers served as our DJ’s and the whole New Gym was jumping during the activities. A very special thank you to Ms. Krysz, the Trep$ club members, and all of the staff members who graciously participated in our Pi (Pie!) Day activities."
