HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - The Superintendent of Schools previewed a newsletter highlighting district achievements and announced the upcoming Chromebook lottery at the Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education meeting on Thursday evening.
Dr. Matthew Helfant opened the September Board of Education meeting with a six-plus minute presentation previewing a newsletter which gave a "snapshot of the past five years" achievements. The newsletter will be emailed to parents in the district on Friday, September 27, and posted on the district website. He explained that NJ SLA test scores (previously known as PARCC) have gone up across all four district schools, Euclid, Lincoln, Middle and High School, providing comparative charts showing the increasing scores.
He noted that the average SAT scores are now in 1100's, having been below 1,000 several years ago. He explained that the high school offers free SAT test prep classes twice a year (in the fall and spring), and that there are currently 35 students enrolled in the fall session.
Helfant said that the district is currently ranked #66 in the state, up from 100 in 2018. He also announced that two years ago Hasbrouck Heights was nominated as a Lighthouse District by the state of New Jersey, the only one of Bergen County, because of the "tremendous academic gains."
He explained that the improvements within the district were due to "collaborative work between the teachers and administrators." He commended the teachers for their in-class efforts and thanked the "Board of Education for the support and the resources that we need." He said they'll "continue to show progress and make gains through setting district goals every year, working together...and wellness classes where they look at the whole child, their mental health and how that impacts them in the classroom."
Helfant also announced that the district will make available 100 of the best Chromebooks which will be distributed via an electronic lottery. An email will be sent to parents at the end of next week (week of September 30.) Parents can submit their name for the lottery. Chromebooks will be sold "As is" and will be $25. There will be a limit of one Chromebook per family.
