WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - The first Wood-Ridge Board of Education for 2020 opened with presentations to three Students of the Month on Monday evening in the high school's auditorium.

The first student honored was Julia Starbeck, the Wood-Ridge Intermediate School Student of the Month for December 2019. Keith Lisa, Principal, made the award. He described the sixth grader student as "compassionate, hard-working...is kind to her friends, is respectful to her teachers, dedicated to her school work and hobbies." He noted her favorite subject is Social Studies, and favorite part of the week is Band, where is she plays the flute. She aspires to attend Harvard Law School.

Lisa also presented the January Student of the Month, Sergio Vazquez. Lisa noted the fourth grader was "a hard worker, responsible and kind, pays attention and always follows directions, eager to learn, always willing to lend a helping hand to the teachers and classmates." His favorite subject is Math. Outside of school, Vazquez likes to play with his dogs, watch tv and videos, and plays basketball, baseball, and soccer, said Lisa. When he grows up, he'd like to be an engineer.

The Wood-Ridge Junior/Senior High School Student of the Month, Xavier Aviles, was presented by Assistant Principal Maria Barrows. She explained the ninth grader "has a tremendous work ethic and always puts forth effort into all of his assignments. He is kind and respectful, and he's a pleasure to have to in class....he's a great leader and role model for the other students in our school."
