WOOD-RIDGE, NJ -- The Wood-Ridge Board of Education announced that the summer reading program will be updated and revamped in response to recent parents' requests.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sue DeNobile said the district had taken inspiration from the New Jersey State library group which publishes lists for summer reading programs. The group's theme is based on the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar mission to the moon, July 20, 1969, by astronauts Neil Armonstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

DeNobile said the space theme will be "One small leap for Wood-Ridge, one giant leap for all students."

She indicated that teachers have revamped book titles, received professional development, and coordinated with the Wood-Ridge Memorial Library, and schools' media specialists.

"This is a perfect opportunity for students to also take part in what the Wood-Ridge Memorial Library will do," she said. "There's so much information that comes together with this. I think we can have something rich and wonderful."

She observed that students can have conversations with their parents and grandparents about the historic event, noting that there will be "lots of source information, current events, also, science, technology, arts and history" included in the topic.

Superintendent of Schools Nicholas Cipriano spoke about the collaboration between the teachers and public library.

"We want to get the community involved, too," he said.

The list of booking offerings continues to be updated said DeNobile, and it will be out before the end of the year, noting that the public library will have hard copy, audio, and online versions of books available too.
