EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - Mario Gomez laced the second pitch of the game over the head of the Lyndhurst left fielder for a three-run triple and Hasbrouck Heights was off to the races in a 13-2 win over the Bears in the opening round of the Last Dance Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Riggin Field in East Rutherford.
The Aviators play St. Mary on Wednesday at 5 pm as the Gaels defeated Becton on Tuesday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for 2 pm, but was changed to 5 p,m, late Tuesday night.
Gomez would score the game’s first run on Tristan Govea’s sacrifice fly, and the Aviators would add two runs on a Dario Morales triple and a single by Matt Baker in jumping out to a 4-0 lead after an inning.
Lyndhurst got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the first of starter Connor Friedel, taking advantage of a walk, a passed ball and an error to score their run,
The Aviators added to their lead in the top of the third, as two walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases for catcher Nick Cuccio, who forced in a run when he was hit a 1-2 curve ball, giving the Aviators a 5-1 lead.
The Bears once again bounced back with a run in the bottom half of the inning, as three straight singles plated their second run of the game, cutting the lead to 5-2.
Heights stretched the lead back out in the fourth, as, with two outs, Govea walked and Friedel blasted a shot over the head of the Lyndhurst centerfielder, circling the bases on an inside the park home run for a 7-2 lead.
The Aviators put the game away in the fifth, scoring six runs, with Nico Tsiolos and Govea knocking in a pair of runs each with singles. Baker added an RBI single and Gomez stole home for the Aviators final run.
Friedel limited the Bears one earned run, allowing only three hits, in four innings of pitching, striking out 10 and walking one.
