HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - While most of the Hasbrouck Heights students and faculty were coming to grips with the fact that it was early Monday morning, senior Matteo Ochoa was looking forward.
Monday, Hasbrouck Heights High School held a signing ceremony for Ochoa, who has decided to play football at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), in the fall. Ochoa, a two-way starter at the offensive line and linebacker in 2019, is expected to play linebacker at The College of New Jersey. Ochoa was named First Team All Bergen County as an offensive lineman.
“The first time I visited there, it felt like home,“ said Ochoa went asked why he chose TCNJ. He stated that he felt he would get a great education, and was looking to help tell the football program around help them win a championship. The Lions went 2-8 under head coach Casey Goff.
Ochoa will be majoring in mechanical engineering, and is looking forward to playing football there. Currently, a three-sport athlete at Hasbrouck Heights (Ochoa is a starting forward on the basketball team, and is a thrower on the track team), he will just be concentrating on one sport, football, in addition to his studies.
“I think that it will make it a little easier to just be able to focus on football and school,” Ochoa said.
Ochoa was an All-NJIC Meadowlands selection at linebacker in 2018. He was also a two-time basketball captain, and was a second team All-NJIC Meadowlands selection in track for the shot put, while also being named Honorable Mention for the javelin.
