HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - The Hasbrouck Heights High School football team has turned for a former player to become its next head coach. Bryan Ille, a graduate of the class of 1995, will become the Aviators head coach for the 2020 season. He comes to Hasbrouck Heights after spending 2019 at Livingston High School, where he was in charge of both the offensive and defensive line.
He replaces Nick Delcalzo, who retired after 45 seasons on the Hasbrouck Heights football sidelines, 36 as the Aviators head coach. Delcalzo introduced him as the new coach to the public.
“It is a great feeling,“Ille stated. “It is a blessing to come back to a wonderful, warm community with good hard-working people and I can’t wait to get involved with what we are doing here."
“Coach D is a legend, and a great person. No one can replace him. I am going to come in, be myself, put the things that I believe in and keep the traditions that Coach Delcalzo put in. He has done great things, I am just looking to keep things moving in the right direction.”
A member of the Hasbrouck Heights Hall of Fame (Class of 2011) for his play on the lines as an Aviator, Ille was a First Team All Bergen County selection on the defensive line in 1994 for the Aviators, after being named as Honorable Mention All-BCSL-Olympic his junior year. The 1994 team captured the North 1, Group 1 title with a 14-6 win over North Arlington at Giants Stadium.
Ille attended Montclair State, where he was a three-time selection to the New Jersey Athletic Conference All League team three times as an offensive tackle, twice making First Team.
An experienced high school assistant coach and coordinator, he has spent the past 18 years coaching at a high school level, with stops at Livingston, Irvington, Wayne Hills, West Orange and Barringer. Ille has also coached basketball and track at a high school level, having been named Essex County Coach of the Year in Spring Track at West Orange.
“It is my pleasure to welcome Bryan Ille back to our Aviator family,” said Hasbrouck Heights Athletic Director Mike Scuilla. “Bryan brings many years of successful coaching experience, has a sincere connection to our community, and leadership qualities that we were specifically looking for in our many qualified candidates. Coach Ille is going to seamlessly mesh with our coaching staff and continue the tradition that we can come to expect with Aviator football.”
An advantage for Ille is that he is familiar with the staff that is currently in place.
“The staff has done a great job here,” Ille stated. “I would like to keep as many of them as possible. Obviously, I played for Coach Delcalzo, some of them played with me at Heights, Coach Rocky (Minichiello), was on the staff when I played. It is nice to come in and trust the people you are working with.”
Ille becomes the 16th coach in Hasbrouck Heights football history, dating back to 1918, but just the fourth since 1967.
