WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - A 13-0 spurt in the third quarter lifted Wallington to a 55-50 win over Wood-Ridge Thursday night in a Wood-Ridge Holiday Tournament game. Wallington faces Dumont, who beat Lodi, 85-54 in the opener, in the Championship Game Friday.
Wallington’s Jordan Vega had nine during the three-minute span. The key to the span however, was the foul he drew on Wood-Ridge point guard Liam Winslow, which sent him to the bench with four minutes remaining in the third quarter with four fouls. The Blue Devils saw a 34-27 lead evaporate by the time Winslow was able to get back in to start the fourth quarter.
Winslow to that point had been the Wood-Ridge offense, as he had 21 of his game high 24 up to that point, accounting for 70 percent of the Blue Devils offense. Vega was the Panthers' offense in the second half, scoring 19 of his 20 points after halftime. He and Zaheer Mitchell led Wallington with 20 points a piece in the game.
The Panthers only used five players the entire game.
The Blue Devils tied the game at 44-44 with 4:47 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Stephen Crandall. But Vega answered that three with one of his own, and Wallington never trailed.
Ryan Sarver had 12 points for the Blue Devils while Anthony Betkowski had 11.
Wood-Ridge falls to 0-3 on the season.
