HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights boys soccer coach William Thorne is confident going into this year that his team can compete for a league title once again, and have their minds set on improving their post-season experience.

“We are not happy with the way we went out,” stated Thorne, speaking of the penalty kick loss to Boonton in the North 1, Group 1 playoffs.  “Our returning varsity players all saw how quickly a season can come to a close when things aren’t done at the highest level, and that left a bad taste in our mouths all offseason.”

Thorne is going to rely on a versatile team that can play different positions, different formations, without requiring lineup changes.  He also knows that he is in a tough league, with a proven power in Wallington that Hasbrouck Heights will need to battle to win the division.

With 11 varsity players returning, Thorne feels he has what it takes, and is hoping for balanced scoring this year.

Goalkeeper:  There is a new keeper in net for the Aviators, who lost Second Team NJIC All Meadowlands keeper Antony Markonovic.  Senior Logan Kennedy gets the call. Dylan VanRyn will be his backup. The Aviators are normally one of the best defensive teams in the Meadowlands Division and are counting on Kennedy to do his part.

Defenders:  The strength of the team perhaps, with Second Team All League defender Ryan Garden returning for his senior season, joined by Honorable Mention selection Killian Turner.  The two seniors provide two-plus years of varsity experience going into season, and will lead a veteran group along the backline.

Another returning varsity player in senior Nick Petrosino will be one starter, with junior Adnan Hoti slotted for the other slot.

Depth will come from juniors Ethan Ortiz and Michael Squicari, and sophomore David Ivan Hernandez.   Midfielder Michael Gerges can also swing back to defense if required,

Midfielders:  Second team All-Meadowlands selection senior Victor Barris will lead a deep contingent of midfielders.  Seniors Alec Escalante, Andrew Martinez and Gerges will start in the midfield with sophomore David Caceres.

Depth will come from returning junior Rafael Mendoza, and senior Enrique Castro.  A handful of players trying to step up from junior varsity are juniors Thomas Capozzi, Alesandro Ciminata, Angelo Licini and Renato Mani will also provide depth.

Forward:  Team captain Mario Gomez returns for his senior year with a new position up front.  The Second Team All-Meadowlands selection in the midfield is being counted on to add scoring punch to the Aviators front line.

Senior Rafael Mendoza provides depth and experience up front as well.
