MAHWAH, NJ - Coming in as favorites to capture both the boys and girls Group D titles, the Hasbrouck Heights cross country teams both delivered on Saturday morning at Darlington Park in Mahwah. Both teams will advance to the Bergen Meet of Champions.
The boys defeated Bogota 20-52, with New Milford coming in third with a score of 110.
(For those unfamiliar with cross-country scoring, each runner get a point based on their place in the race. Each team enters seven runners, with the top five scoring. The non-scoring runners still have importance, as by finishing ahead of other team’s runners, inflating their score. Low score wins.)
Sophomore Evan Morrow came in second overall to lead the Aviators. Nick Bua then led a pack of Aviator runners across the finish line, as the next six finishers were from Hasbrouck Heights, spread out over a minute.
On the girls side the meet was closer, but the Lady Aviators once again prevailed, defeating Saddle Brook by a score of 36-48, with Bogota in third with 61 points. (There were only five teams entered in the team category.)
"Yesterday was a great day for our program," Hasbrouck Heights head coach Mike Ryan stated. "Both the boys and the girls won the Bergen County Championships."
"For the girls its their third in a row, fourth in five years, and seventh title since 2008," Ryan continued. "This one may be the sweetest. We have had a run of bad injuries and we won yesterday keeping this team together with band aids. Some of our injuries include Halyn Xheraj and Mia Guerra, both expected to be in my top 3, were both hurt at the Season Opener. Mia ran her first race yesterday and was my number six, and Halyn has yet to run. Shannon Artuso sat out Tuesday to-Thursday this week with a hip flexor injury. Hayley Kasper missed two weeks with an ankle injury. I ran her in the JV race. To win yesterday, we needed our big three of Isabella Drezek, who placed second, Emily Estrada, and Artuso to have big races, and they did. But the meet was won when Roberta LaBarbera ran a season best and freshman Gaea DePass popped a big race and was our fifth girl in to seal the title. Gaea should have been in the freshman race, but I took a chance running her in the varsity because she has been running well the past two weeks.
"For the boys, it's their third straight Bergen County title" Ryan stated. "Our top seven boys placed in the top nine, all earning medals. We were led by Evan Morrow who also placed second, with Nick Bua and Jake Porco up front (as well.) Right behind them were Cole Sonzogni, Damian Summers, TK Kasper and Joe Canavathel. The boys are very deep team which is evident in our JV team easily winning the small schools race. Our JV team would have placed third in the varsity race behind our varsity team and Bogota."
