MAHWAH, NJ -  Wood-Ridge cross-country coach Quinn Geraghty has to be pleased with how the season has unfolded so far.

The first year coach is starting from ground zero with the Wood-Ridge cross country program, which is restarting for the first time since the 1990's.  So expectations are not for championships, but for improvement and setting a foundation for the team going forward.

If the results from the 2019 Bergen County Group Championships are any indication, he has achieved exactly that.  The Blue Devils finished eighth of 10 teams in the boys division, behind meet champion Hasbrouck Heights, but ahead of established programs Ridgefield and North Arlington.

Top finisher Simon Santomaria was 19th, with Andres Lazo 39th and Thomas Perez 43rd.

“Overall the team had a nice showing today,”  said Geraghty. “The boys have progressed nicely, they dropped a about 3 minutes off of their 5 man team average from the beginning of the season to today (averaged 20:28).”

The girls team did not compete in the girls team competition, but had outstanding individual efforts from Christina Vasquez and Callie Negro.  Vasquez finished sixth in the individual standing, with Negro coming in 16th.

“Christina Vasquez dropped 20 seconds off of her PR (personal record) and is moving on to BMOC next Saturday,” said Geraghty. “She was also the runner up at NJIC Patriot division championship.  Christina is our lone senior and has been an outstanding leader for both the boys and girls team all season long.“

“Callie Negro has been outstanding this season as well, placing just behind Christina for third place in our league meet two weeks ago. Callie has been battling a hip injury the last week and missed three days of running, but she went out there today and gave it her all. “

Geraghty is pleased with how the year has shaped up so far.

“Both the boys and girls teams have really bought in to the sport and the training,” Geraghty stated. “I’m very optimistic for the future with this group.”
