BUTLER, NJ - A trip up to Butler, in the rain, brought back memories of the “Mud Bowl” from last year at Butler.   The field conditions held this time, and the Hasbrouck Heights Sub-Varsity and Butler Sub-Varsity teams were able to get their scheduled game in without looking like they had taken mud-baths in their uniforms.

The Aviators, despite a late rally, dropped a 16-12 decision to the Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon at Butler High School.

Butler scored first on a 69-yard pass in the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead after the conversion.  The Aviators were driving late in the second quarter, when Butler took over on downs deep in Butler territory.  Trying to pick up a late score, the Bulldogs threw down the field, but were picked off by Hasbrouck Heights’ Robert Boscarino giving the Aviators a final chance to score before the first half ended.

But Aviator quarterback Brendan Miller was intercepted on a heave into the end zone by the Butler defense.

The Aviators broke through in the second half, when Miller scored from 32 yards out, running down the left side line.  The conversion failed, and the score was 8-6.

The score did not remain that way long, as Butler returned the ensuing kickoff inside the Hasbrouck Heights 10 yard line.  They scored two plays later, and then scored on the conversion, for a 16-6 lead.

With a little under four minutes remaining in the game, the Aviators special teams came through, blocking a Butler punt.  Miller then hit Michael Canavatchel for a 30 yard catch and run, cutting the lead to 16-12. Once again the attempt a 2-point conversion failed.

The Aviators defense tried to give the offense one last chance, but a questionable pass interference call on a fourth down play in the final minute allowed Butler to run out the clock,
