HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - It was a very different football scrimmage in Garfield on Thursday night, as Hasbrouck Heights played its lone pre-season scrimmage against the Boilermakers.
With fans banned from attending, and only media allowed inside the field at Garfield High School, the stands were empty except for coaches. While Garfield wore its home uniforms, Hasbrouck Heights decided to go with its practice shells, which are all orange, with no numbers on them. (That, of course, did not stop a handful of parents and fans from trying to watch from outside the stadium, with limited success.)
The scrimmage itself saw the Aviators defeat Garfield, 19-0, after a competitive first half that saw the Aviators come up with two turnovers, one interception and one fumble recovery. Hasbrouck Heights lead 7-0 at the half.
Rocco Minichiello powered in from a yard out for the only score, on the game's first drive. Minchiello later ripped off a 35-yard run through the Boilermakers defense, and Steven Faussette made the play of the night with a scrambling, twisting turning run after recovering a snap that sailed over his head, picking up a first down.
The Junior Varsity/second team looked strong in the second half, moving the ball with ease, while the defense shut down the Garfield offense. The second half was played with a running clock.
At the end of the game, there was no sportsmanship handshake; the teams waved to each other from their own sideline.
(Editor's Note: Photos accompanying football stories in TAPinto Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge/Teterboro) will look different than in past years, at least for high school games, as media has new COVID-19 restrictions regarding access to the field. Media is prohibited from being on the sidelines during games, but will be permitted field access from behind the end zone areas. These guidelines are to protect players from interaction with media.)
