HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - The next time the Aviators take the field, September 5 at Cresskill, it will count.

While there were mistakes made on both sides of the ball, the Aviators looked efficient on offense, and opportunistic on defense as Hasbrouck Heights scrimmaged Garfield Wednesday night at Depken Field.

Quarterback Spencer Lee hit wide receiver Zai’heer Jenkins from three yards out for the scrimmage’s first score, with 1:56 remaining in the first quarter, to go up 6-0  on the Boilermakers. Junior kicker Connor Friedel nailed the extra point to go up 7-0.

The Hasbrouck Heights defense had recovered a backwards pass for a turnover to start the drive, as Garfield took the opening kickoff and was driving before the mistake gave Heights the ball.

Another turnover created the second score, midway through the second quarter when Rocco Minichiello picked off a pass to give the ball in Garfield territory.  Minichiello had originally returned the ball inside the 10, but was penalized for hurding a potential tackler, moving the ball back to the 30.

Lee hit receiver Stephen Faussette to move the ball inside the five.  Lee carried the ball over from three yards away, and the Aviators led 14-0.

Garfield rallied late in the first half trying to get on the ball.  Garfield quarterback Jason Hayes completed a pass within the five yard line, but the receiver was hit by Jenkins, knocking the ball out. Matteo Ochoa picked the fumble out of the air, and the Aviator defense preserved its shutout with its third turnover of the night.

The second half belonged to the junior varsity teams, with Jake Diaz scoring the only touchdown for Aviators.

Garfield scored on a deep pass on the last play of the scrimmage for its only score on the evening.
