NORTH ARLINGTON, NJ -Hasbrouck Heights handled their end of the bargain, and then they had to wait. The answer was not what they wanted.
Behind a two first half touchdowns for Zai’here Jenkins, Hasbrouck Heights crushed North Arlington, 47-0. Up 34-0 at the half, the Aviators then had to hope for a series of events to occur that would allow them to be NJIC Meadowlands champs for the fourth consecutive year.
A win by Butler over Cresskill would create a three-way tie atop the standings of the Meadowlands, and would set up a tie-break situation which could see the Aviators come out as the number one seed going into the crossover playoffs, with a chance for its fourth straight trip to the championship game.
But Cresskill, trailing the entire game, threw a game winning touchdown pass with 27 seconds remaining, making the Cougars the NJIC Meadowlands champion outright. The Aviators, at 4-1 in the division, finish second, with Butler third.
The Aviators opened the scoring with 9:13 remaining in the first quarter with Jenkins powering in from five yards away for a 6-0 lead.
Following a punt, quarterback Spencer Lee capped off 77 yard drive with a 12-yard run, for 12-0 lead. Steven Faussette ran for the conversion for a 14-0 lead.
The next touchdown came after Lee hit Jake Diaz for 37 yards and freshman Anthony DiLascio ran for another 23 to bring the Aviators inside the five yard line. After a false start set the Aviators back to the six on a third and goal at the one, Lee hit Daniel Viola with a five yard scoring strike. Connor Friedel’s kick was good for a 21-0 lead.
Jenkins, who also had an interception on the day, scored his second touchdown with 5:29 remaining in the half, to go up 27-0. DiLascio scored the first of his two touchdowns on the evening with 3:47 left to give the Aviators a 34-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half was just a continuation of the first, with the offense moving the ball at will, and the defense playing to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard in hopes of a Butler win and a tie-breaker scenario, shutting down North Arlington’s offense.
DiLascio scored on a one yard run to allow the Aviators stretch the lead to 40-0 in the third quarter.
Hunter Freschi broke a 58-yard run with three minutes remaining in the game for the evenings final score.
