SADDLE BROOK, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights erupted for 34 points in the first half, while completely shutting down Saddle Brook’s offense en route to a 47-15 victory over a Saddle Brook Saturday afternoon in Saddle Brook.
The Aviators defense, which had its troubles in the loss to Cresskill completely shut down Saddle Brook, holding them to no first downs in the first half. The effort would have been even more impressive if a questionable pass interference call had not canceled a pick-six for senior Zai’here Jenkins.
Offensively, the Aviators moved the ball at will all day, and did not punt.
Quarterback Spencer Lee scored two early touchdowns with his legs, from 15 yards out and from two yards out, as the Aviators jumped out to a 14-0 lead following a Lee-to-Jenkins 2-point conversion, with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter.
David Morgan recovered a Saddle Brook fumble and dashed 36 yards for a 20-0 lead just two plays later. Connor Friedel kicked the extra point to run the score to 21-0.
Lee threw for a touchdown early in the second quarter, hitting junior Rocco Minichiello wide open down the middle for a 28-0 lead after Friedel’s extra point. Halfway through the second period, Michael Robertson busted a 25-yard run for a 34-0 lead, as the extra point failed.
Lee had a chance to do even more damage before the half, but he fumbled inside the five yard line, which was recovered at the two yard line in the final moments of the first half.
Robertson returned the second half opening kickoff 72 yards to put the Aviators up 40-0 and trigger the running clock for the rest of the game.
Saddle Brook broke the shutout when Jason Muoio scored from six yards against the Avaitors second team defense, cutting the lead to 40-7.
The Aviators second team offense, marched back up the field, scoring on an 11-play drive, all on the ground, when junior Mohammed Assaf scored on a field yard run up the middle, with Friedel’s extra point running the score to 47-7.
Saddle Brook scored the game’s final touchdown on the last play from scrimmage, when quarterback Max Cue heaved a ball down the left sideline that receiver John Hacker snatched from the Aviator defensive back for a touchdown. Dante Guzman ran the ball in for a two-point conversion as the clock expired.
NOTES: Lee rushed six times for 37 yards and two touchdowns, while completing seven-of-nine pass attempts for 110 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion.
