BUTLER, NJ - Mohammed Assaf ran for one touchdown, and the Aviator’s defense came up with timely plays, as Hasbrouck Heights defeated Butler in a junior varsity football game Monday afternoon in Butler.

Assaf punched the ball into the end zone from five yards away, capping off the Aviators first drive of the afternoon, following a Bulldog fumble which was recovered by Trey Armonaitis just inside Heights territory.

Quarterback Brendan Miller started the drive with a 13 yard run.  Assaf barreled up for five, and Miller for three, setting up a 3 and 2. Miller then completed three straight passes, to Jadan Nelson (4 yards), Robert Boscarino (11 yards) and Isaiah Barone (9 yards) to put ball at the Butler 16.  After Miller carried the ball 11 yards to the five, Assaf scored to give Hasbrouck Heights a 6-0 lead.

Miller then hit Michael Canavatchel with a pass for the two point conversion and the Aviators led 8-0.  ‘

Butler drove the field and scored on the next possession, but were stopped on the two point conversion, to make the score 8-6.

Following an Aviator punt, Justin Torres picked off a Butler pass, giving the Aviators the ball in Butler territory. Hasbrouck Heights was able to move inside the five, but the Bulldogs held off the Aviators on the half's final two plays, keeping the score at 8-6.

The Aviators took the second half opening kickoff and drove the field behind the running of Assaf and Miller.  Facing a third and goal from the three, Miller hit Canavatchel with a three yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-6.  The conversion attempt was stopped by the Bulldogs.

Butler bounced right back, scoring on a 33-yard run two plays after the kick return.  On the score, Butler would pick up a costly dead ball personal foul penalty. Hasbrouck Heights, given the choice of taking the penalty on the conversion or the kickoff, chose to move Butler back on the conversion.

Going for they tie, the Bulldogs threw to the left flat, where Armonaitis intercepted the Butler pass, keeping the game at 14-12.

Following an Aviator turnover, the Aviators' defense came up with a stop to get the ball back. On first down, Heights stuffed running back Rocco Presti for no gain.  On second down, Kevin Campen and Armonaitis combined to sack the quarterback for an eight yard loss, setting up third down.

Following a false start,  Butler quarterback Kyle Coker dumped the ball in the right flat, where Campen met him for a four yard loss, giving the Bulldogs a fourth and 27 situation.  Despite having only a little over four minutes in the game, Butler punted.

Assaf and Miller handled the rest, and when Assaf scampered for 12 yards on a fourth and four with 42 seconds remaining, the game was out of reach.  The Aviators took a knee and walked off with a 14-12 victory.
