CRESSKILL, NJ - It was a rocky start for the Hasbrouck Heights JV football team, but the Aviators turned things around, and the offense rallied for a 14-12 win over the Cougars Monday afternoon in Cresskill.
The Cougars scored on their first two possessions, holding a 12-0 lead just seconds into the second quarter. But freshman quarterback Donovan Auriemma led the Aviators to a score before the first half ended, hitting AJ Parente with a touchdown pass in the left corner to put the Aviators on the board, at 12-6. The conversion failed.
Coming out at halftime behind, Anthony Grasso tied the score at 12-12, with a 22-yard run midway through the third. Hasbrouck Heights converted on the two point conversion as Auriemma hit fellow freshman Frankie Billings with a pass in the end zone for a 14-12 lead.
The Aviators defense, which struggled early, stiffened, not allowing Cresskill any momentum. While Cresskill picked up a few first downs, the Aviators were able to prevent thee Cougars from scoring.
The Aviators stopped the Cougars on a fourth down at the Hasbrouck Heights 17 with four minutes remaining in the game. The Hasbrouck Heights offense was able to run out the clock, icing the victory the Aviators.
