UNION CITY, NJ - Union City jumped out to a 12-6 first quarter lead, and held on for a 26-21 lead at the half en route to 57-38 win over Wood-Ridge in the finale of the Union City Holiday Tournament on Saturday morning. The Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season to the Group 4 Soaring Eagles.
Samantha Eckert grabbed 16 rebounds for the Lady Blue Devils, but was held to just four points on the game, after breaking into double the first 10 games, Amanda DiMase, 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Natalie Cala 10 points, led the Wood-Ridge offensive attack.
The Soaring Eagles opened the game up in the third quarter, outscoring Wood-Ridge 19-10 to take a commanding, 45-31 lead going into the fourth,
Erika Mercedes had 24 for Union City while Elainy Pichardo added 17 for the Soaring Eagles.
"We are never happy with losing," stated Wood-Ridge girls basketball coach Lou Wejnert. "But we are happy with the 4-1 start. The kids are great, and we are a work in progress. I see growth every day and improvement. We got a late start, but we will catch up."
