HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights High School girls tennis coach Suzanne Caines is enthusiastic about getting back on the tennis court, even if it is a month late. This is not the first time that unusual circumstances have interfered with the Lady Aviators tennis season.  A year ago, a bus accident disrupted the lineup.

“Despite this strange time and our abbreviated pre-season, our Girls Tennis Team is pleased to have a large group of very enthusiastic players, many of them freshman,” said Caines.

The Lady Aviators are in the process of a building process, coming off a 6-10 season in 2019. Senior co-captain Julia Trexler (first doubles) is the only senior on the team.  She will team with junior Victoria Todd, and the duo is expected to be strong at first doubles. They step up to first doubles after playing together as second doubles last season.

Junior co-captain Devon Sonzogni will lead the way at first singles in her third year as a singles player at the varsity level.  She progressed from third singles as a freshman to first singles as a sophomore, and will once again be in the top spot.

Sophomore Ati Karahalil has worked hard, said Caines, and looks to make the step up from junior varsity as a freshman to take the second singles spot.

A pair of returning junior varsity players, Diana Saad and Meaghan Shaw will be the Lady Aviators second doubles team, and Caines is confident in both of her doubles teams being competitive.

The final spot, third singles, is still up for grabs with freshmen Mia Sato, Victoria Kokoszka and junior newcomer Katelyn Tutelo batting out it out for the spot.

“We hope to be more competitive than last season,“ Caines stated. “With only a handful of returning varsity players, one senior and 10 new freshmen, we hope to use this year to continue rebuilding our program.“

“Devon (Sonzogni) has been working diligently on her game this summer and hopes to be more competitive at the first singles spot," said Caines. "Our lone senior, Julia Trexler, has shown tremendous leadership, along with Devon, in helping our new players to feel part of a team, during this unusual season, and should be strong at first doubles, along with her partner, Victoria Todd.”

“We have a handful of returning JV players who we expect will help us this year,“ Caines stated. “I am looking forward to seeing Ati Karahalil in her new role at second singles, as well as returnees Diana Saad and Meaghan Shaw. Freshmen, Mia Sato and Victoria Kokoszka, as well as first-year player Katelyn Tutelo are also showing great promise."
